TAHAROA EXPRESS

What happened on the Taharoa ?

In June 2007, in an attempt to outrun forecast bad weather, the Taharoa Express put to sea from New Plymouth, NZ with an incomplete load of ironsand slurry. The nature of the load (including some holds containing kilotons of free water) and the influence of worsening wind and sea conditions meant that the vessel was forced to abandon its course and seek shelter - with a list of up to 22 degrees.

Without eyewitnesses or electronic data to inform their investigation, The NZ Transport Accident Investigation Commission turned to 3D visualisation to illustrate their theories and findings as to the cause of the incident.
